GENERAL QUESTIONS
Is Out In Louisville free?
Yes. From our news to our personals, Out in America City Sites services are entirely free for the GLBT community. The
sites are supported by the advertisers you see, and we hope that you will support us by patronizing our advertisers.
Why should I sign up for a membership?
Joining allows you to enjoy all of our interactive services, including chat, quick mail, personals, forums,
member photos and our e-mail newsletter.
Who will see the information I use in the signup form?
Your password and mother's maiden name are entirely secure. You may choose whether or not to display your e-mail address to other users
or simply use our in-house "quickMail" e-mail system, insuring complete security.
Great! How do I sign up?
Just click here: http://www.outinlouisville.com/membership/signup.asp.
Make sure your e-mail address is entered correctly to receive verification!
Will my membership get me in all 178 Out in America city sites?
Not at this time. We are exploring ways to create a global membership, but for the time being we've tried to make the sign-up process
as quick and simple as possible.
Do you have more cities sites planned?
We do have plans for future expansion. Feel free to leave a feedback message with your suggestion.
CHAT
I can't get into chat. What's up?
Also, make sure you are entering the correct chat room. Only women can enter the women's chat room and vice-versa. Users under 17 are
required to use the Youth chat floor, and those over 16 are not allowed in. If your member profile has an incorrect or incomplete
age, you will not be able to use the chat.
If you are receiving an error message, you may want to update your browser to the most recent version of a compatible browser system.
What browsers can use Out in America chat?
Although you can use any web browser to view the Out In Louisville website, you need a Java-compatible browser to
access our chat rooms.
For a Macintosh system, we recommend Netscape version 4.77 or higher or Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher. For a Windows system, we
recommend Netscape version 4.77 or higher or Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher.
Netscape comes with Java support (called a Java Virtual Machine or Java VM) already installed. Unfortunately, sometimes the Java
VM breaks. On a Mac, this may be fixed by installing the Java patch. On both a PC and a Mac, you can reinstall Netscape being sure to
download the full install of Netscape. We recommend not using the "Smart update feature" as this has been known to break
the Java VM.
Can I use WebTV?
The WebTV browser does not currently support Java (just JavaScript which is different than Java); please visit the WebTV website for
additional information or to provide feedback.
I don't see anyone chatting, but the site lists people in chat. What gives?
The total number of chatters listed is a total of our 3 chat floors, women, men and youth, and a combination of all the rooms in each
chat floor. If you don't see anyone in your city's chat room, wait a while-the catch-22 of chatting is that people don't stay in chat
because others aren't staying.
I keep getting disconnected from the Volano Chat server. What's wrong?
Here are some possible reasons why you may be disconnected from the Volano Chat server:
* You are closing the Web page that contains the Volano Chat applet.
* You are surfing off of the page that contains the Volano Chat applet.
* You are being kicked or banned by a monitor or administrator.
* There is an Internet connection failure at some point between you and the Volano Chat server.
* There is a SOCKS proxy or network address translating router on either the client or server side which has a "session
time-out" value defined.
* The Volano Chat server is stopped or being restarted.
You need to keep the browser window that called the applet open. This is a restriction in the web browsers, not our software.
Microsoft Internet Explorer kills the applet as soon as you leave its page. Netscape allows you to wander about 10 pages from the applet's
page before killing the applet. You should open up another browser window if you want to surf and chat at the same time.
Volano Chat does not have a "timeout" feature. There is no way to automatically disconnect or
"bump" you after a certain amount of time, such as after a period of inactivity (not chatting).
You may not realize that being in a real-time chat room requires a dedicated socket connection between the client and the server
-- it's not like viewing a Web page. If you are on dial-up connections with a consumer ISP (Internet Service Provider), it's very likely
that you are unable to keep a dedicated socket connection all day without being disconnected once or twice. If ISPs reset routers or other
routine maintenance, all the connections go down. You usually don't notice such problems while browsing the Web since each Web
connection lasts only about one or two seconds. Such problems might show up as a picture that doesn't come in, and you simply
hit the refresh button to fix it.
How can I become a chat monitor?

PASSWORDS AND LOGINS
I forgot my password. What do I do now?
Our password retrieval system will e-mail you your password: http://www.outinlouisville.com/membership/forgotpassword.asp
To use this system, you must provide your mother's maiden name, which you submitted when you signed up for membership. If the e-mail
address you submitted in your profile is no longer in service, you will not receive your password notification, and you'll have to
contact feedback: feedback@outinlouisville.com
I forgot my member name, too. What now?
If you have a general idea of what words might have been used in your member name, you can to a member search to locate your profile:
http://www.outinlouisville.com/membership/search1.asp
My account was suspended because of my Hotmail account, but it works fine. What gives?
Often, the "Hotmail" system does not deliver the tracer our system uses to determine that your email address is real.
Hotmail often has a high security filter, making it often unreliable for our purposes. Using this mail system will mean that you may
not receive membership and photo verification, as well as password reminders.
We suggest setting up another free account with a more reliable service (such as yahoo), or use another account. You need not display
this account in your profile.
I get
an error when I try and update my profile.
What am I doing wrong?
You may have a character error in the text you
are entering. Try to avoid using parenthesis
[()} and apostrophes (they can be read as
programming code sometimes) when you enter
text for your profile. It may also help to
enter one field at a time to avoid losing a
lot of info.
My
computer automatically logs me into the site,
but I don't want to use that feature anymore.
How do I fix it?
Automatic login is a feature requested by a
large majority of our users. However, you can
to turn off automatic login. To do this, click
"Log Off" on the main page when you
are ready to leave. You will be given the
option of saving only your username and not
your password, or neither your username nor
password. When logging back on in the future,
be sure to UNCLICK the box that says
"enable auto login".
I
share my computer with someone else who uses
your site. How can we keep our profiles
separate?
If someone else uses your computer, auto login
will not be able to distinguish between
multiple accounts. Unclick the "enable
auto login" box when you access the site,
and be sure that others using your computer do
the same.
My
membership says it has been suspended, but I
didn't delete my membership. What gives?
From time to time, a system error may result
in an erroneous suspension. Please contact us
if this occurs.
PERSONAL/CLASSIFIED/QUICKMAIL
ERRORS
I
get an error message after I spend
considerable time filling out a personal,
classified or QuickMail message. I filled all
out all the fields, what gives?
The site works on a time-out system to insure
that you are still logged in. If you take more
than 20 minutes on one page, whether it be a
classified, personal, QuickMail or resource
entry, the system will assume that you have
left the site and log you off, which loses any
information you had been working on. The
advantage of this system is that you don't
have to log on for every page and you never
have to log off to protect your security. If
you find your self taking over 20 minutes
filling out a form, we suggest typing the info
you want in a separate medium before cutting
and pasting the info on the site.
MEMBER
PROFILES
How
can I add a photo to my profile or change my
information?
To edit your profile, including neighborhood
change, e-mail address, newsletter signup,
photo addition, or self-description, please
log onto http://www.outinlouisville.com/membership/editprofile.asp
I
uploaded a photo and I don't see it online.
What's wrong?
The photo you have submitted must first be
approved for content by one of our staff
members. After it is approved, the photo will
take approximately 24 hours before the photo
update system uploads it to the web page.
Uploading another photo before it has posted
will delay this process.
I
uploaded a new photo, but I still see the old
one. What's wrong here?
Most likely, your browser is simply storing
the old image in its memory. Go back the
member photos and reload your browser. If you
still see the old photo after the 24-hour
approval period, contact feedback: feedback@outinlouisville.com
My
member photo is distorted. How can I fix that?
Photos are uploaded in a 100w X 120h ratio,
which are the dimensions displayed. Members
can upload larger photos within those
dimensions, which displays the
"larger" 130w x 150h version. If
your photo is not within these parameters, it
may appear "stretched" or
"pixilated".
How
can I change my member name?
All you have to do is click here: http://www.outinlouisville.com/membership/changeusername.asp
How
do I can cancel my membership?
To cancel your membership, go to: http://www.outinlouisville.com/membership/cancel.asp
PLUS
MEMBERSHIPS
What
is a "plus membership"?
Plus memberships are for users who want to
take their Out In Louisville
membership to the next level. For a small fee,
users can increase their mailbox, have access
to extra and adult photos, have their
QuickMail forwarded to their email, and more!
For more information about plus membership,
you can take the plus memberships tour here: http://www.outinlouisville.com/membership/upgrade.asp
Does
this mean that Out In Louisville
is no longer a free service?
No. Out In Louisville has
never charged for any of the basic services
that our users have come to know and love. The
site is very dedicated to keeping basic
memberships free to our users. "Plus
Members" packages simply offer extra
services to our members if they so choose.
If
I get an Out In Louisville
plus membership, does this give me plus
membership privileges in all 178 sites?
Yes. Once you are a plus member you gain plus
membership to all the cities in the Out in America
cities network.
How
do your plus memberships compare with other
GLBT upgraded services?
Other services charge as much as $70 a year
just to allow users to respond to member's
profiles. Our plus program is less expensive
and allows access to plus member galleries,
QuickMail forwarding and more, but never
restricts access to general services.
What
if I'm not sure that I want a Plus Membership?
We have four different billing options: one
year, three months, one month, or seven days. The seven
day membership comes at only $6.95 - so if
you aren't sure this is the way to go!
What
if I don't have a credit card?
Offline payments are accepted with a personal
check, official bank check, or money order.
You can download a form to mail or fax here: http://www.outinlouisville.com/membership/paymentform.asp.
What
should I do if I feel that I've been
erroneously charged or charged twice?
If you feel that there is an error on your
credit card bill, you can fax a copy to our
accounting department (614-298-0422). If you
have been charged in error, we will refund the
charge. Be sure to include your member name,
city and the date when you upgraded your
account.
What
if I would like to change my membership plan
or cancel?
You can change or cancel your plus membership
plan here: http://www.outinlouisville.com/membership/status.asp.
What if I want a refund on my Plus Membership?
Click here for information concerning refunds on Plus Memberships Refund Policy.
QUICKMAIL
Can
I forward Out in America "QuickMail"
to my regular e-mail address?
QuickMail is an member to member internal mail
system, and was not initially designed to do
this, however we have recently made changes
that allow our (+) Plus Members to enjoy this
feature. (+) Plus Members have the option
to forward all their QuickMail messages to an normal email
address, and they can reply directly from that
address. Non (+) Plus
Members do not have access to this feature.
How
do I delete sent messages?
Unread sent messages can be recalled by going
to your Sent items box and clicking delete.
If the member has already read your message,
it cannot be recalled.
Read messages are stored in your inbox for
approximately 7 days, and then moved to the
deleted folder for another 7 days.
You can move a deleted message from the
deleted box to your inbox again should you
wish to keep it.
How
do I view a person's profile when they send me
a QuickMail?
There is an icon of a person's profile next to
the user name. Click on that, and you will be
able to read their profile.
What
is the POP3 and SMTP address for QuickMail?
QuickMail is an internal mail system - and
will not work with standard email clients.
RESOURCES
Is a
listing in your online resource directory
free?
Yes. You can add a listing for your
business/organization here: http://www.outinlouisville.com/resources/submit.asp
We do offer additional listing enhancements
for a small charge, but the basic listing is
absolutely free.
What
about web links?
Those are also free, although we require a
reciprocal web link on the submitter's
website. You can use our "LINK
TO US" webpage to get our standard
graphic and linking code.
How do
edit my listing?
At this time, there is no way for the public
to edit listings. You can contact the feedback
department with the alterations, however, and
they will make the necessary changes.
NEWSLETTERS
How
do I subscribe/unsubscribe from Out In Louisville
newsletters?
Just click here: http://www.outinlouisville.com/Membership/Newsletter.asp.
Enter your e-mail address and select whether
to subscribe or unsubscribe.
I've
tried to unsubscribe, but I still get mail.
How can I correct this?
Most reasons for the unsuccessful unsubscribe
requests usually occurs due to an aliased
email account. If you have an older email
account that may be the account that is
forwarding the newsletter to your new account,
please try that address.
For
example, CompuServe changed it's servers to:
johndoe@cs.com, but still forwards the
messages so that messages addressed to
johndone@compuserve.com, still can get to
John, in this example, John should try
unsubscribing both addresses. Don't forget
about vanity email addresses that forward to
your real address, try unsubscribing those as
well.
I
subscribed for a newsletter months ago and
have never received one. What gives?
We're probably waiting for a city membership
to reach "critical mass" before
sending out a monthly newsletter. Don't worry;
your newsletter is coming soon, so stay tuned!
ADVERTISING
Why
should I advertise online?
Online advertising can do everything that
"flat" advertising can and more.
Besides providing visual recognition for your
company, we can directly connect the client
with your business, like a phone call.
Why
should I advertise with Out in America?
Out in America allows you to target a national
audience, a regional audience or a local
audience. No other gay and lesbian website
provides this flexibility.
Can I
get more information on your advertising
possibilities?
We have an online media kit right here: http://www.ethani.com/advertising
